DPF Cleaning Specialists
If your diesel’s warning light is on, it’s running in limp mode, or it won’t start at all, Fred Henderson can diagnose and fix the problem properly — no guesswork, no unnecessary parts.
A blocked DPF rarely fixes itself. Left too long, what starts as a warning light can become a no-start condition, costly component failure, or a car that permanently burns more fuel. Catching it early is almost always cheaper.
Sometimes a DPF can be cleaned and brought back to life. Other times, it genuinely needs replacing. We’ll tell you which, honestly, and won’t push you towards an unnecessary repair. Our cleaning options include forced regeneration and specialist cleaning solutions.
A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) captures the soot produced by your engine to prevent it going into the atmosphere. Over time, especially on cars used mainly for short journeys, it can fill up faster than it can self-clean. When it gets too blocked, your car will let you know — usually with a warning light or a drop in performance.
Yes, under the right conditions. Most modern diesels will attempt a “regeneration” — essentially burning off the built-up soot at high temperature — during longer motorway-style driving. But if your car mainly does short trips, this process often doesn’t complete, and the filter keeps building up. Once it’s past a certain point, it needs professional attention.
Not always in an emergency, but don’t leave it long. If it’s a standard amber warning, you may have a chance to try a longer drive to trigger a regeneration — but if the light stays on, or you notice limp mode or smoke, bring it in. The longer a blocked DPF is ignored, the more expensive the fix tends to be.
It depends on the condition of the filter and the underlying cause of the blockage. We’ll check both before making a recommendation. Cleaning is often a cost-effective solution when the DPF itself is in reasonable shape — but if it’s damaged or the blockage is severe, we’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
We’d strongly advise against it. DPF removal is illegal for road use in the UK, and the vehicle will fail its MOT. It can also cause problems further down the line. We only carry out repairs that keep your car legal, safe, and roadworthy.
